Hi
wrote up some of the tours I did as descriptions for others to find. Hope its not too detailed but would be great to get more beta from other routes in the area. Maybe someone can use it to plan for a longer trip, too.
Area of the Routes - looking north towards Munich from the summit of Jochberg/Kochel. On the left Lake Starnberg, in the middle Penzberg and Bad Tölz is situated behind the hills on the right.
and below looking south west across the Walchensee from the summit of Jochberg.
Day trips and link ups south of Munich
Apart from Munich’s superb cycle path network, there are lots of nice skate trips in the countryside south of Munich in the foothills of the alps. Below you find three routes that can be linked up and start or end in places accessible from Munich on public transport within an hour. The first one describes the 45 km from Iffeldorf along Lake Starnberg back to Munich. The second describes a route from Wolfratshausen to Iffeldorf and the third one is a route from Iffeldorf to Bad Tölz. As add on, there is also a description of a trip around lake Walchensee and a short workout track around Penzberg.
All routes (except the Walchensee round trip) are at least 80 % of the time on cycle lanes or on small country roads with little traffic. In general try to go out during the week, as on the weekends you share the area with around 1 million people from Munich and traffic increases accordingly.
Here is a link to the Routes on google maps.

1. Iffeldorf to Munich
Start: Iffeldorf train station – trains at least every hour from Munich central (direction of Kochel)
End: Munich Fürstenried West subway station – or continue on the well signposted Munich cycle network to add some more km.
Distance: 45 km 3-4 h
Bail: The most scenic part is done when reaching Starnberg and you can also take the train from here back to Munich.
Detailed description:
Leaving Iffeldorf train station and skating for half a km, you first have to cross underneath the railway tracks on a dirt track and walk another 300 m to the main street, cross it and start pushing. Until reaching St. Heinrich the route runs on a small country street through forests and across fields. In St. Heinrich you reach the main street at the shore of Lake Starnberg. A cycle path runs along it which is not always paved so every now and then you need to use the road for a few km. Make yourself visible and try to avoid this on a busy summer weekend. Have a drink at the St. Heinrich beach bar (“zum kleinen Seehaus”) during the summer months. Later the route runs all the way along Lake Starnberg on the old lake street, open in most places only for residential traffic. Don’t forget to bring your swimming gear. A few km on, a hill up to the main street needs to be climbed (steep if you go downhill!) in order to avoid a scenic park without paved roads – King Ludwig II (think Neuschwanstein or Disney) died here and has a monument. Up on the main street the cycle lane takes you, while cruising downhill, to Percha next to Starnberg. In case you are hungry grab some food before, as nothing like a petrol station or else will be met on the remaining journey to Munich. Here you can bail and take the train back to Munich from Starnberg. If you continue go right up a hill outside Percha and follow the smooth cycle lane along the motorway eventually crossing it underneath. After skating through a small town and down a gentle slope the cycle path takes you to the beginning of the Forstenrieder Park – a large forest. Here you can simply continue on the smooth old Olympia Street till Munich or turn left on a country lane. Following the country lane for a km or so you can take a dirt road (the right one) on your right and have a nice walk for 15 min through the forest until the path gets some tarmac and runs straight through the forest until the finish in Munich. Be aware of wild boars in Forstenrieder Park especially from dusk till dawn.
2. Wolfratshausen to Iffeldorf
Start: Wolfratshausen train station (S7)
End: Iffeldorf train station
Distance: 25 km
here I have more pictures as I take the route regularly back from work.
Detailed Route:
When taking the S7 commuter train to Wolfratshausen, try to grab a seat in the travelling direction on the left side of the train. You will be rewarded with superb views once you leave the Munich suburbs. It’s a 45 min ride from Munich central station. Continue along the train tracks in Wolfratshausen past the bus stations, cross the main street and tracks and start skating on a cycle lane next to the old train tracks. At a busy crossroad you can conveniently skate through the underpass to cross diagonally. Next to a car garage you pass the locally famous “Charlies Bratwurst shop”. 1.5 km later you cross the river Loisach on a blue wooden bridge. From now on, follow the cycle lane to Penzberg through Achmühle, Eurasburg and Beuerberg for 14 km, taking you always a bit up and down with nice views of the alps.
Just after the cycle path meets again the street in a close to 90 deg. bend at a Recycling plant near Quarzbichel the path climbs up again. Near the top you can take it easy and follow the street to the right to Hoisl Bräu (good food and beer) and on to rejoin the route. In case you skate from Iffeldorf to Wolfratshausen take the route via Hoisl Bräu. However you will miss out the following easy downhill cruise but trading for a steeper ascent via Nantesbusch. At the bottom, at a bus station, just before a small stream take the street to the right and start the steep climb up to Nantesbusch. If you continue straight to Penzberg you can link to the Bad Tölz or Penzberg skate after another 2 km (1 km on the road) by taking the small Obermaxkron road to the left just after the Pizzaria and the bus stop.
Skate through Nantesbusch and enjoy the superb view of the north face of Benedikten Wand once you reach the top.
From here it is mostly downhill on a super smooth road to Iffeldorf. There is only one short steep climb just after the lakes.
Follow the obvious country street passing a Seminar centre, swimming lakes, a golf course and crossing over the motorway to roll into Iffeldorf.
Turn right and follow the cycle lane to the train station. Take care – the cycle lane ends just before an underpass after a blind downhill curve and takes you straight into the oncoming traffic!
3. Iffeldorf to Bad Tölz
Start: Iffeldorf train station
End: Bad Tölz train station
Distance: 30 km
Route:
Follow the cycle path along the road to Penzberg. After a golf course, the path leaves the street uphill and skirts around the Restaurant Troadstadl. Take the Kirnbergerstaße on your left to avoid Penzberg. Where the street ends take the cycle path to the left along the Dr. Gotthilf-Näher Strasse. Follow the cycle path through two roundabouts always taking the first exit. Weave your way through Penzberg according to the map. Eventually you reach the Hagebaumarkt at the Zibetholzweg. This small road is a nice downhill cruise through the forest, as it leaves Penzberg towards Obermaxkron. Turn right at the T-junction and follow the country lane past a sewage plant next to the river Loisach finally up to the main road. Turn right here and follow the cycle lane in order to be able to cross underneath the main street to reach the cycle lane and signposting to Bichl. Here you need to find the Ludlmühlstraße taking you slightly uphill to the Steinbachstrasse, which leads you now downhill to the state road to Bad Tölz. Here you can cross and connect to the signposted cycle lane to Bad Tölz. First it runs northwards of the state street to Bad Heilbrunn before running alongside it.
I once took a different – hillier but quiet - route a bit more to the North to Buchberg as a worthwhile alternative. It is quite steep down from Buchberg to Bad Tölz. Continued later on the Arzbacherstrasse to Lengries on a calm evening during the week with little traffic.
Once in Tölz, cross the river Isar and walk through the picturesque centre uphill to the end of the pedestrian zone – grab a well-deserved icecream. Find your way uphill to the train station (signposted) and take the Bayrische Oberlandbahn (BOB) back to Munich.
4. Workout lap Penzberg
Start & End: Penzberg centre / Sport Conrad
Distance: 10 km
Route:
Push through the centre of Penzberg to climb a up small hill, taking the first exit in the roundabout and continue along the street until Zibetholzweg (Hagebaumarkt). Follow Zibetholzweg downhill continue right on the country lane past the sewage plant to the hydroworks Schönmühl. Turn right at the top use the underpass to cross the state street and continue in the direction of Penzberg. After a couple of meters turn left via a bridge over the railway and continue on the road to Johannisrain and enjoy the view.
The road leads you back in the direction of Penzberg and a steep drop through the forest lets you cruise slightly downhill across a field and into the centre of Penzberg.
5. Walchensee
Along a scenic mountain lake with ample opportunities for a jump in the cold waters.
Start: Lobisau
End: Urfeld
Distance: ca. 20 km
Looking south fromthe summit of Jochberg to Walchensee.
Public transport: Train to Kochel & Bus 9608
It is also possible to skate the main road and start and end in Urfeld but only on days with exceptionally few traffic such as when there happens to be a Bayern Munich Champions league final (worked well for me )
Get off the bus in Lobisau at the Camp Site. Follow now the small road always along the lake. Lots of opportunities to jump in the bitter cold water. You reach the eastern end of the lake at the Niedernach power station. Shortly after, at the Waldschänke Niedernach, the street starts to climb in the direction of the Jachenau. Here I had to keep to the hiking path to the left and walked as the street was redone. However the initial plan was to skate up there then take the road on the left leading down to Sachenbach (Ferienhof Jörgelbauer). From Sachenbach the street winds its way along the shore to Urfeld.
